Troubleshooting Common Air Conditioner Problems

When your air conditioner isn’t working right, it can be frustrating, even maddening, especially when temps creep into the 90s. But not every AC problem means you need to call the experts. In fact, there are several issues that home and small business owners can fix on their own without much hassle.

Here are some simple steps you can take to solve some of the most common air conditioner glitches before calling a professional. These tips can save you money, time, and get your system back up and running faster than you think.

Check the Thermostat First

It might sound obvious, but one of the easiest fixes is simply checking your thermostat. If your AC won’t turn on or isn’t cooling properly, start by confirming that it’s set to “cool” and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If your thermostat uses batteries, make sure they’re fresh and installed correctly. A blank screen or unresponsive controls could point to low battery power or a minor internal fault that’s easy to fix.

Replace or Clean the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is one of the most common reasons an air conditioner underperforms. If you’ve noticed reduced airflow or warmer-than-expected air from your vents, the filter could be the problem. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends checking your air filter monthly during peak usage seasons to prevent strain on your system and lower energy bills.

Check your filter and replace it if it looks dirty or hasn’t been changed in the last 30–60 days. Changing your filter is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of AC maintenance and avoid bigger issues down the road.

Inspect the Circuit Breaker

If your AC doesn’t turn on at all, it’s worth checking your home’s circuit breaker panel. Sometimes, the system trips the breaker due to a power surge or heavy demand. Look for any tripped switches and reset them if necessary. However, if the breaker continues to trip repeatedly, that could signal a deeper electrical issue, and it’s best to consult an electrician.

Clear Debris Around the Outdoor Unit

Your AC’s outdoor unit needs space and airflow to function correctly. Grass clippings, leaves, dirt, or even overgrown shrubs can block the unit, causing performance issues. Take a few minutes to clear at least two feet of space around the unit and gently hose off any visible debris stuck to the fins. Always turn off the power before doing this.

Use low water pressure when hosing down the unit to avoid bending the delicate aluminum fins or forcing water into electrical components.

What to Do if Your AC is Leaking Water Inside

If you notice water collecting around the base of your air handler—that’s the large metal box inside your home (usually in a basement, utility room or closet) that holds your furnace and the indoor part of your central air system, it could mean the drain line is clogged.

Algae and dirt often block the pipe that carries condensation away. Try using a wet/dry vacuum to clear it: attach the hose to the end of the drain pipe outside, seal the connection with a rag or tape, and run the vacuum for a minute or two.

Be sure to turn off your AC system at the thermostat and the breaker before attempting this to avoid any electrical hazards.

If the clog doesn’t clear easily or water keeps backing up, stop and call a professional—forcing the issue could damage your system or lead to overflow.

When to Call a Professional

Some AC problems should never be ignored. If you keep running the system anyway, you could risk damaging your system or driving up energy costs. Call a licensed HVAC technician if you notice:

  • Loud or unusual noises coming from your system
  • Refrigerant leaks or visible signs of fluid around the unit
  • Uneven cooling, even after replacing the air filter
  • Frequent system shutdowns or poor performance despite troubleshooting
  • A thermostat that doesn’t respond or displays incorrect readings

If you’re dealing with any of the issues above, it’s best to schedule professional AC repair before the problem gets worse.
