How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Seasonal Changes

Whether you’re reaching for cozy winter sweaters or digging out your summer sunhat, we all enjoy preparing for the changing seasons.

Though it might be less fun, preparing your HVAC system for those seasonal shifts is essential. Proper HVAC maintenance can save money, boost efficiency, and keep your home comfortable throughout the year. Here are practical tips for preparing your heating and AC for the temperature swings.

1. Replace Your Air Filters

One of the easiest yet most crucial maintenance tasks is replacing your air filters. Clogged filters block airflow, forcing your system to work harder, reducing efficiency, and driving up energy costs. Even worse, it can strain your HVAC unit, shortening its lifespan.

Experts suggest checking filters every 30 to 90 days, depending on usage, pets, or allergies. If the filter looks dirty or you can’t see through it, it’s time to change.

2. Inspect and Clean the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit needs regular attention, especially before and after the summer months when it works hardest to cool your home. Over time, leaves, dirt, and debris can accumulate around the unit, reducing efficiency.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Trim any plants, grass, or bushes around the unit to ensure it has at least two feet of clearance on all sides.
  • Use a garden hose to gently clean off dirt and debris from the exterior coils. Be careful not to damage the delicate fins.

Keeping the outdoor unit clean helps your HVAC system run more efficiently, saving energy and improving overall performance.

3. Check Your Thermostat Settings

Adjusting your thermostat settings to match the weather is a smart move as the seasons shift. A programmable or smart thermostat can make this process easier. In the cooler months, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature while you’re home and lower it when you’re away or asleep. In the warmer months, raise it when you’re not home to conserve energy.

Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat that can learn your habits and adjust the temperature automatically. Not only does this save energy, but it also ensures your home stays comfortable throughout the day.

4. Schedule a Professional HVAC Tune-Up

Just like your car needs regular maintenance, your HVAC system benefits from professional maintenance at least once or twice a year. A trained technician will inspect your system for potential issues, clean internal components, and make necessary adjustments to ensure it runs efficiently.

A well-maintained HVAC system is more likely to last longer, operate more efficiently, and avoid costly repairs down the road. Ideally, schedule a tune-up in the fall before winter sets in and again in the spring before summer arrives.

5. Inspect Ductwork for Leaks

Leaky ducts can reduce your system’s efficiency by as much as 30%. As air escapes through leaks or cracks, your HVAC system has to work harder to maintain your desired temperature. Inspect your ductwork for any visible damage, loose connections, or gaps.

If you notice significant leaks, having a professional seal the ducts is a good idea. This can improve your system’s efficiency and save you money on energy bills.

6. Test the System Before the Season Hits

Before you switch to heating or cooling full-time, test your system to ensure it works properly. Turn it on briefly to check if it heats or cools effectively. If you notice any unusual noises, odors, or performance issues, it’s best to address them before the system is in full use for the season.

7. Check for Drafts and Insulation

Drafts and poor insulation can make your HVAC system work harder than necessary. Check windows and doors for drafts before the winter chill or summer heat arrives. Sealing any gaps and adding weatherstripping can help maintain a consistent indoor temperature.

Additionally, make sure your home’s insulation is up to par. Proper insulation reduces the strain on your HVAC system and keeps your home comfortable, no matter the weather outside.

By preparing your HVAC system for the changing seasons, you’ll improve efficiency, extend the life of your system, and avoid inconvenient breakdowns.
